courie bishop is a thief!

Loyal readers of my blog will know that we have been participating in community supported agriculture for a number of years. It has been an overwhelmingly positive experience. That is, until this year. This year we decided to try a new farm. One reason we decided to try a new farm was because it was hard to find people with whom to split a full share, so we wanted to find a farm that sold half-shares. When we heard Double Rabbit Farm sold half-shares, we decided to check it out. Their website had a testimonial about the minimelons. Watermelon is one of my favorite foods, so I was easily sold. I should have known something was up because the testimonial was from someone named Magenta. Double Rabbit said they would deliver heirloom vegetables May through October. Well, their greenhouse collapsed, so May was canceled. Then their seedlings failed, and the dog died, and this is what we got in June:

Seriously, I have grown more lettuce in a pot on my deck, and I am by no means a green thumb. Then they canceled deliveries in July, but claimed that they would make up for beginning August 4. I know it has been a hard growing season, but my friends are still getting veggies from their CSA's. I don't know what is worse, getting nothing for my $$, or getting these shitty emails from Courie (the so-called farmer) about how, "thanks to your contributions we don't have to work odd jobs this summer!" Wow, I didn't know I signed up to make a donation to your farm, beyotch. Well, August 4th, I headed down to the Midtown Farmer's market to pick up my share and there was no Double Rabbit booth and no explanation. WTF!! I go home and check their website, and it has been taken down. So, I email the listserv, and someone replies that their email to Courie bounced back. Another person replies that they heard Courie left the farm. It turns out that all their crops failed and we will be getting nothing this season. Of course, we had to figure this out on our own because there was no forthright communication from Double Rabbit Farm. Well, Miss Courie Bishop, the internet is a powerful thing. I googled her, and found all kinds of websites associated with her and her bullshit "magick" art. Ugh. I've been had. That witch took my money and ran. I didn't want it to come to this. I didn't want to use my blog to disparage someone, but I just needed to get this rant off my chest.

You read this rant, and now you know when Emily says "jump," I say "how high dear?"

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Well crap. I'm all about loving the organic crunchy types (hell, I have some in the family), so they are not allowed to be scheisters.

Crapheads. And now you've not had any veg all summer, save that one lettuce leaf. You must have rickets by now.

i have nothing against organic crunchy types. heck, one of my friends called mike a tree hugger! however, i might be biased against magick. seriously, i mostly just don't like being ripped off. one time, i left minnesota. i moved to north carolina for a "year abroad" and i hired movers to move my shit. they totally ripped me off and i wrote a letter to dateline about it, hoping that stone phillips or ann curry would do some kind of expose on the scam that is moving companies. just don't mess with me!

SHITBALLS. What jerks, and seriously, disappointing! I mean, you wanted to eat veggies, you wanted to be a responsible human, and then it backfires! I wonder if your co-op would print a letter, it seems like their customers would also be potential customers to this farm?

That really sucks Emily. Friends get a 1/2 share once a week on Fridays from Seward Coop. I'm not sure of the farm but I'm sure you could run by there and check for next summer. They've been really happy this year and get a biweekly fruit share with it.

a fruit share would be awesome, given my love of watermelon.

I'm with you, and was disappointed with Double Rabbit Farm. But the melons... I think I spotted the same kind of melons at the St. Paul Farmers Market. They were selling like hotcakes, and rumor has it they taste just as good. Best of luck. Jenn

Double Rabbit Farm... sounds too much like a sex toy to be taken seriously as a produce-producing farm.

I liked Mike's description of the farm owner after he picked up the first week's "veggies". Apparently she was heavy set and wearing a long, black broom skirt. He said she looked as if she was hovering like a legless robot.

It was wittier the way he said it.

Hey, at least your greens were edible. Our first "delivery" from Double Rabbit was a handful of wilted, dirty mystery leaves. I mean they really looked like a bunch of weeds.

We also were totally taken, and I am pissed as hell. Basically we have ended up with a $250 tote bag, and no explanation, apology, or contact of any kind.

But I have to say that I am also pissed at the way the Midtown Market handled this. I enquired at the market tent, and they seemed to know what had happened, but were not especially willing to talk about it. They seemed to have had some communication from James and I wish the Market people would have let us know what was up via the newsletter.

This is my last time with a CSA. It was a total fiasco and the one before this was just okay.

I have heard that Double Rabbit Farm is attempting a 'second go' at their CSA business. I guess they are using the same farm and same address. I thought previous customers should be aware of this. My friend also bought a share last year.
